Ms. Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria has called on all parents to make the world a better place for children every day and at every moment by supporting their rights.
These rights include right to education, health, nutrition, adding that the children need maximum protection in a safe environment, in addition to right to sing, to dance, participate and to celebrate the boys.
According to her, “Today is a very special day, we are celebrating World Children’s Day, all around the globe in all the countries of the world. UNICEF is supporting children and celebrating them today across the world. We have to work and commit to make sure they have the rights guaranteed. So this is what we are celebrating today.
“And we are calling for a compromise commitment from us adults to make a better life for children every day and at every moment. That is what I want to share with you today” she said.
Cristian Munduate stated this while speaking to Gatmash News at the World Children’s Day Celebration and the anniversary of the Conversation on the Rights of the Child at Astro Turf, Ikoyi, Lagos on Saturday, 20th November, 2022.
Speaking on the symbol of the football match, she said: “The simple fact is precisely that we have millions of children that cannot even play even when they have the opportunity for sports.
“And this is a strong message that we should let them participate and play and make it inclusive. Today, you see children with us that have different capacities. And because they have different capacities, this doesn’t mean that they should be screwed. We are today, calling, talking and singing and dancing for inclusion.
“All children are the same. All children need to have the same opportunities in life. And if our children have different physical, emotional, psychological differences, it doesn’t mean that they are different. They are just with different capabilities, but we have to provide them the same opportunities.”
No doubt, children have rights to nutrition, education yet there’s a worrisome statistic of the number of out of school children in Nigeria, and malnutrition is high.
Ms. Munduate declared: “You are key actors in society, media, reporters; communicators need to spread, the boys want to demand the right to guarantee school and education. Second, to sensitize at all times that children have a right to be educated and to facilitate their access and their attendance to school.
“We call on the local, state and federal government to be more committed and make all efforts to bring children to school.
“So, this is the concept of human rights that we should do all our efforts to make sure that the children have what they need for healthy growth and development”.
