Cody Gakpo in a brilliant run got behind the Senegal defence to connect with a De Jong cross and steer a glancing header past the onrushing Edouard Mendy from the edge of the six-yard box scoring the first goal for his side in the 84th minute in Netherlands first attempt on target.
Netherlands doubled the score line in the 99th minute of extra time with a brilliant strike from Davy Klaassen.
The first half of the match ended in a stalemate as both sides struggled to find a foothold in the match. Frenkie de Jong came the closest but the Dutch midfielder couldn’t capitalise on a golden opportunity provided to him by Coady Gapko. He tried to cut in but failed and squandered the opportunity to shoot at a goal with no one but Mendy guarding it.
Although Senegal played beautifully and guarded their post till the 86th minute, they couldn’t hold Netherlands to a stalemate to grab a point from the match.
Senegalese star, Sadio Mane, missed the World Cup due to injury sustained in club match last month.
