While the Super Eagles may be missing from the ongoing World Cup in Qatar, a host of Nigerians continue to make headlines and Samuel Adekugbe is the latest after a video of his mother went viral celebrating the defender’s appearance for Canada.
England’s Bukayo Saka was the first to grab the headline after his brace helped the Three Lions to a 6-2 win over Iran.
Switzerland’s duo Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor alongside Jamal Musiala and Karim Adeyemi, who both represent Germany with Canada’s Ike Ugbo and Adekugbe are the other players of Nigerian descent at the Mundial.
On Thursday, a video of Dee Adekugbe, Adekugbe’s mother, who was filled with excitement and dancing after watching her son feature for Canada in their opening day 1-0 loss to Belgium Qatar, went viral.
The Hatayspor defender came on for the final 16 minutes to make his World Cup debut as Canada pushed Belgium close in their first World Cup game since 1986.
Canada’s defeat in their first FIFA World Cup match in 36 years could not deprive Dee Adekugbe of the joy of watching her son play at football’s biggest festival.
The joyful Nigerian mother watched the match from a TV set at home and was proud of her son when he was introduced into the tie in the 74th minute for Richie Laryea.
In a short video posted on Instagram, Dee Adekugbe could be seen dancing and screaming, “My son Sam Adekugbe is in the World Cup….oh my God. Hallelujah.”
Sam Adekugbe will hope to make his full World Cup debut when Canada faceoff with Morocco and Croatia, their two other group opponents.
