The Edo State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed the arrest of four persons for allegedly lynching a yet-to-be-identified man over accusation of stealing a motorcycle at Iyanamo community, Off Ekehuan Army Barracks, in the Benin City area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, in a statement, gave the names of the suspects as Emmanuel Igube,19; Matthew Gimba, 39; Monday Nathaniel, 30; and Gabriel Akuba, 20.
The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Mohammed Dankwara, frowned at the incessant cases of jungle justice in the state and therefore implores residents to repose confidence in the rule of law and in the law enforcement institutions.
“The CP made this call on Monday, following the death of a man, whose identity is yet unknown. The victim was allegedly mobbed to death over an allegation that he stole an unregistered motorcycle.
“Four persons linked to the death of the deceased have been arrested and are assisting the police in their investigation. Meanwhile, the CP has directed that the case be transferred from the Evbuotubu Police Station to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Benin, for further investigation.”
In a related development, the command also arrested three persons, one Bright Omonowa, 34, Clifford Patrick, 22, and Issac Peter, 23, over alleged armed robbery.
“Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of three daredevil armed robbers and members of the Eiye Secret Cult Confraternity on Sunday, November 27, 2022,”the statement said.
