A former Big Brother Naija housemate, Tokunbo Idowu, aka TBoss, has said that competition between former contestants of the show was unnecessary.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, she said, “It is true that the show (BBN) is a huge platform. And yes, fans tend to pitch housemates against one another in the guise of supporting them. It is important for one to block out the noise and focus on what’s important.
“Also, all the competition of who’s ‘slaying’ the hardest or spending the most is totally unnecessary. If one goes broke (trying to keep up appearances), the same people (one was trying to please) would mock one. One should just be true to oneself.”
TBoss also stated that a social media post which she made during the week in which she asked people to spend money on themselves did not mean that they should not have savings or plan for their future. She said, “The post in question was actually about me and where I was at that point. I am extremely prudent when it comes to spending money on myself. I would happily help out family and friends, but would make a thousand excuses why I shouldn’t indulge when it comes to myself. However, it just dawned on me how much I deprive myself of many things only to spend on others.
“As long as one is alive, the bills won’t stop coming. My post was just me speaking out loud that it is time for me to start spending some of my money on myself. I said ‘some’ in the post, but I suppose the mistake I made was that I did not emphasise it in caps. That is why some people thought I meant that one should spend all of one’s money frivolously. Anybody who does that would be on their own. It would be completely silly, because people won’t come to their rescue. The bottom line is that one should enjoy wisely.”
TBoss also stated that BBN gave her the opportunity to meet people that had helped her to make meaningful investments. She added, “The platform exposed me to people who have helped me make a couple of meaningful investments that I get returns on. However, I am not pressured to attend different events round the clock because being a mum is not a walk in the park. Being a single mum is even twice the work, but I am playing the card that life dealt me with all the joy and selflessness possible.”
