The organisers of the ongoing National Sports Festival tagged Delta 2022 have added a new innovation to the country’s showpiece sports event, a beauty pageant.
An auditioning, ahead of the contest, was held on Saturday.
It’s the first time a beauty pageant would be held at the biennial festival since its inception in 1973.
Our correspondent learnt that the event would hold shortly before the end of the festival, though a date has not been fixed yet.
Delta State Sports Commission chairman, Tonobok Okowa, who also doubles as Co-Chairman, Delta 2022, confirmed the new development.
“Yes, there are plans already to stage the pageant,” Okowa told our correspondent.
It was also learnt that Gladys Igut, a former beauty queen, who is now the Cross River State Sports commissioner, would be part of the organisers of the pageant, to ensure a successful hosting of the event.
Virtually unknown in the sports world, Igut, winner of the Obubra Queen beauty pageant for 2011/2012, came to national limelight at the last festival in Edo, leading Cross River to the event with the least athlete contingent — 35 — but returned home with 30 medals: nine gold, six silver and 15 bronze.
