The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency has said only 10,236 kilometers representing 30 per cent of federal roads are in perfect condition for use by motorists across the federation.
This is despite a N610bn budget allocations for maintenance of roads for the agency from 2003 to 2021.
The figures which were contained in a document obtained by The Punch revealed that out of the 36,000 kilometers of federal roads in the country, 5,118 kilometer representing 15 per cent were fairly tolerable roads, 8,530 kilometers representing 25 per cent are poor and intolerable while 10,236 kilometers representing 30 per cent were totally failed roads.
Reacting in an interview with The PUNCH, the Managing Director of the agency, Nurudeen Rafindadi, lamented on the overdependence of roads in carrying out economic activities.
He said roads continued to play the primary role as far as transport infrastructure in Nigeria was concerned and its maintenance has been below expectations.
He said, “The only transport infrastructure that is working today in Nigeria is road, even though we have five types of transport systems: roads, rail, air, water and pipelines.”
