Imo State women’s football team on Wednesday claimed the gold medal following a narrow 1-0 win over Team Lagos at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State.
Imo saw off Team Delta in the semi-finals and then displayed tenacity to record a narrow victory over Lagos in the final played at the Austin Okocha Stadium, Ogwashi-Uku.
Ex-international and coach of the Imo team, Ramson Madu, while speaking to journalists after the match, said, “I am a happy man today, for a team to beat Lagos and Delta; the host team, it’s not an easy one and with this now, people will know that Imo have a team,” he said.
Madu credited the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for the team’s success in the tournament.
“The magic behind the success is our state Governor. He motivated us very well, so after God, the praise should go to the government of Imo State for bringing us here to participate in this event,” Madu added.
He also told our correspondent that the Imo team will now prepare for another festival and also try and incorporate some members of this team into the state club team.
“This is a state festival team, so we will continue to prepare another team for the next festival because this may not be the team to go for the 2024 edition.
“We have our state team in the Nigerian Women’s Football League, Heartland Queens. I will ask the management of the team to look at this squad and pick those that have the quality to play for them, instead of them going to another club from other states,” he said.
