Set 92 of the Ayedere Ajibola High School, Lagos, has called on the government and other stakeholders in the education sector to create more opportunities for students to observe extracurricular activities.
Speaking at the set’s 30th year anniversary of leaving school, outgoing general secretary of the set, 2020 to 2022, Mr Segun Asamo, explained that extracurricular activities would help in the development and growth of learners.
“Government should take education seriously and look into mushroom schools spread all around. Students no longer have extracurricular activities as they should. Government should take interest in the welfare of children too.
“Government should encourage extracurricular and move away from too much academics but involve them in tasks that will help innovative thinking. If we did well without social media, the government should help them focus on productive things. Government should lead by example.
He advised parents to restore discipline in the training of their children, adding that children should not be pampered.
For the outgoing Vice President, Kehinde Adesanmi, said it was a thing of joy meeting her friends of over 30 years.
She also advised the government to make education free, and accessible for all, and provide free feeding for learners.
“Education today can’t be compared with what we had. We had the opportunity to be sponsored by the government, basic education should not be self-sponsored, it should be sponsored by the government.
“Government should also think of how to provide food for children going to school. Government shouldn’t take education with levity.“
The group added that it provided boreholes and tanks for the senior and junior schools, 20 modern whiteboards, and school uniforms to 20 students, engaged SS 3 students in mentorship and career seminars.
