The Executive Director, Halifield Schools, Mrs Halima Oke has said sporting activities enhance learning.
She added that education was an all-encompassing activity for the physical, mental and development of a child, adding that sporting activities were part of learning.
She stated this at the school’s seventh biennial inter-house sports competition which took place at the Sports Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
Oke said the school could not organise the competition for three years due to the pandemic.
She said, “We have come to realise that education is not just academics while one of those things that enhance academics is sports. Physical exercise creates fitness in a child and it is fun to the children to be excited.
“And when you do these things that are fun to do, they enhance learning. Education is not just studies or academics, there are other things that enhance education, one of them is sports. This is the reason we take part in competitions such as aerobics, and sports to ensure our children are in good form as we can see the excitement in them at this year’s sports competition today.”
Sports Director, Halifield Schools and Chairman, Planning Committee, Christian Igweh called on the government to invest more in sports, saying it would go a long way to engage the youth and address the problem of insecurity in the country.
Igweh told the government to increase sports budgetary allocation and institute sports academies to groom the youth, adding that this would take a lot of youths off the streets and reduce juvenile crimes significantly.
“Sports is a key part of our programme in Halifield Schools as we believe that while some will excel in academics, others would also take to sports,” he said.
