The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, approved the deployment of advanced surveillance technology to address insecurity and crime in Imo and other South Eastern states.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, disclosed this to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Uzodimma said Buhari’s approval will usher in the use of advanced surveillance equipment to fight insecurity without collateral damage.
The tools, he said, will soon be delivered to the South East.
“I also appealed to him for further support, to support us with some technological deployments; we have planned to be able to do an advanced kind of security control in the South East. He has also given his approval to that.
“And in a moment from now, we will be getting some surveillance equipment and some modern technologies that will help us manage security so that we can fight crime with little or no collateral damage to the environment,” the governor explained.
Uzodimma also noted that he was on a thank-you visit to the President for previous requests he had granted, including the conversion of the Federal Medical Centre Owerri to a university teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology and the conversion of the Alvan Ikoku College of Education to a federal college of education.
Ohakim recounts ordeal
Meanwhile, a former governor of the state, Ikedi Ohakim, revealed on Tuesday how gunmen attacked his convoy and killed four of his police officers on Monday.
Ohakim, in a tweet posted on his Twitter handle, @DrIkediOhakim, said that those who attacked him operated in a BMW salon car.
The ex-governor tweeted, “Yesterday, at about 4.30pm, I was viciously attacked along Isiala Mbano-Ehime Road in Imo State by gunmen driving a blue BMW salon car.
“The gunmen rained bullets on my convoy. The only vehicle that escaped was the one I was occupying. Sadly, I lost four of my men in the attack.”
