A yet-to-be-identified naval rating has been arrested over the death of a teenager, Nengi Enenimiete, whose corpse was found in a hotel in Twon Brass, in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The police in November 2022 said offensive odour from the decomposing corpse of the 16-year-old led to the discovery of her body in the hotel’s wardrobe.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Sunday that the suspect was arrested by the naval police in collaboration with community youths.
According to a source, the suspect is in the custody of the Nigerian Navy at Egweama in the Brass LGA, and would be handed over to the police for prosecution after the naval internal trial.
The spokesman for the state police command, Asinim Butswat, stated that the corpse was found by the hotel’s manager.
Efforts to get the comment of the Public Relations Officer of the Central Naval Command, Yenagoa, Commander Yohana, proved abortive, as his number was switched off as of press time.
Butswat, while confirming the incident, said, “On November 21, 2022, the manager of a hotel in Twon Brass reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Brass, that he perceived offensive odour from one of the rooms in the hotel. Upon a search, he discovered a lifeless female corpse hidden inside a wardrobe.
“The deceased was later identified as Nengi Enenimiete, 16. Investigation is ongoing to identify the suspects who lodged in the hotel room on the night of the incident. The corpse has been deposited at a mortuary for an autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”
