The activist was said to have been a vocal voice in condemning plans to arrest the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for terrorism financing.
The Publicity Secretary of the MBYV, Abbah Owoicho, who confirmed the arrest to journalists, said Meliga’s wife had been crying because her husband had routine drugs she took to keep fit.
Meliga was said to have been arrested by the Department of State Services for exposing an alleged plan to frame Emefiele over alleged links with terrorism financing.
The CUPP said the meeting would also be used to demand the sacking of the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, in view of his recent activities which undermined the directive to of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
The CUPP in a statement by the Secretary of its Steering Committee, Peter Ameh, expressed worries over alleged repeated involvement of the DSS DG in activities which threatened the very hope for a credible election and alleged plot to force the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, out of office.
Other issues, according to Ameh, linked to him were plans to stop the currency re-designation and cash withdrawal limit.
The CUPP also expressed concerns over the attack and assault on opposition candidates especially the detention of the New Nigeria Peoples Party governorship candidate in Kano, Abba Yusuf, on the orders of the wife of DG, Aisha.
The CUPP said, “The recent aggressive unwarranted behaviour of the DSS operatives is becoming a huge source of concern. Over the weeks, the DSS operatives have deviated from their mandate and resolved to hunt individuals carrying out their constitutionally recognised duties.
“First was the plot to get INEC chairman and the CBN governor sacked. Now, we read on the news that Aisha Bichi, the wife of the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, has ordered the arrest of the Kano governorship candidate of the NNPP, Abba Yusuf, and barred him from boarding a Max Air flight from Kano to Abuja on Sunday night.
“These acts are signs that the DSS might be one of the problems to a successful 2023 election, hence the need for opposition leaders to meet and take far reaching decision. The meeting will have in attendance all members of the opposition alliance at the CUPP headquarters.”
