The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on state governors in the South East to declare public holidays for workers to enable them to go and collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
It urged the state governors to take advantage of the extended period of the collection of PVCs by the Independent National Electoral Commission to put stringent strategies that will compel Igbos to go to their political wards and collect their uncollected PVCs in the 95 local government areas of the South East.
The group made the call in a statement on Sunday by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro.
The statement read partly, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges the South East governors to put up strict regulations in place to ensure that all Igbo parents present their PVCs before registering their children back to schools, and all workers should not earn their salaries without showing their PVCs.
“We call on state governors to declare work-free days and public holidays for civil and public servants to go and collect their PVCs.
It urged the Ndigbo not to allow the opportunity to pass by without doing the needful.
Pay-TV’s free messages
Meanwhile, a pay-TV station, MultiChoice Nigeria, has said it will regularly broadcast free INEC messages on PVCs collection.
Explaining the decision to support INEC’s PVC collection campaign, Chief Executive Officer, MultiChoice Nigeria, Mr John Ugbe, in a statement on Sunday, said the company was committed to the country’s democratic development, especially the credibility of electoral processes and procedures.
He said, “The broadcast will, in particular, be targeted at youths, overwhelmingly the country’s biggest voting demographic category, through DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29.”
