She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the right of every girl child to receive an education.
In 2008, when the Islamic Taliban Movement took control of the town, she lived, Swat Valley, the school she attended was burnt down and girls were ordered to stay away from school. Yousafzai kept a diary of all the events that transpired and spoke against the Taliban’s terrorist regime
Her life was threatened after her diary was published by BBC Urdu in 2009, and she was shot in the head on a school bus by a Taliban gunman in 2012.
Fortunately, she survived the attack but had to flee to England and live in exile with her family because a ‘fatwa’ (a decree issued by a recognised Islamic authority) was issued against her.
Yousafzai spoke at the United Nations on the equal right to education for girls all over the world, her first appearance since the shooting on July 12, her 16th birthday.
TIME magazine named her as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2013.
