Fresh facts emerged on how gunmen stormed the residence of the spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Ugochinyere, on Tuesday, barely three weeks after a similar attack on him in Akokwa, Imo State.
Our correspondent learnt that Ugochinyere was not around during the attack one Ikedi Ikegwuonu, said to be his brother, was abducted.
The assailants were said to have told the brother to show them the whereabouts of the CUPP spokesperson.
The PUNCH reported that on January 14 in Akokwa, Imo State, gunmen on motorcycles invaded and burnt Ugochinyere’s house, cars and killed his uncle and three others.
Ugochinyere, who is the House of Representatives candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Ideato North and Ideato South federal constituency, had then raised the alarm about the attack by the gunmen at his residence, calling for help.
On Tuesday, Ugochinyere raised another alarm of attack by armed men in a Save Our Soul message he sent to journalists
He said, “SOS, We are under attack again. My house is under attack again by armed men with explosives and heavy gunfire.”
Sources said the latest incident created panic among members of his campaign team.
Sources also said Ugochinyere was not at home when the attackers struck.
The assailants, who were said to be masked and heavily armed, attacked workmen, such as masons, welders, carpenters, electricians and mechanics, who were in the house carrying out repairs from the last attack.
Some of the workers, who were said to have fled for their lives, called from their hiding places and informed the CUPP spokesperson of the attack.
The gunmen were said to have had a field day and spent about 20 minutes unchallenged despite SOS messages sent out immediately Ugochinyere got the notification.
