A yet-to-be-identified student of the University of Cross River State was on Thursday shot dead by suspected cultists who stormed the campus in the Calabar area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the gunmen drove into the school in a Toyota Sienna car and headed straight to where the student was with his friends and upon sighting them, the victim took to his heels.
An eyewitness, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the armed men gave the student a hot chase, caught up with him, and allegedly shot him dead on the premises of the school.
He said, “The incident took place in front of me and my friends. We were strolling past the Engineering Faculty when we saw some students sitting in a group and chatting and from nowhere, a Sienna car drove towards them and one of the students stood up and ran. Some young men stepped out of the car and pursued him.
“After they shot him from behind and he fell, they went close to confirm if he was dead, fired the final shot on his chest and went ahead to use his shirt to cover his face.”
Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Onen Onen, said, “A student was shot. The VC will issue a statement about it.”
