As the February 25 and March 12 elections inch closer, the apex socio-cultural youth organisation of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Ohanaeze Youth Council, has called on the Federal Government to disband the Ebubeagu Security Network in Ebonyi State.
The OYC made the call in a Friday statement signed by its National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, according to a Vanguard report.
Igboayaka alleged that Ebubeagu was a militia group of the Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, adding that the security outfit had become a terror to the people.
He said, “Ebubeagu Militias squad in Ebonyi State is now a terror to villagers and a tool of harassment, torture and intimidation against any perceived political enemy of Governor David Umahi. The activities of Ebubeagu are becoming too worrisome and unbearable.”
Igboayaka, in the statement, expressed worries that if Ebubeagu was allowed to continue its operations in the state, there might be blood bath during the coming elections.
He, therefore, urged the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, and heads of other security agencies to act fast to “banish” the Ebubeagu security network.
“The National Security Adviser, National Director of State Security Service, Inspector-General of Police must as a matter of urgency understand that Ebubeagu in Ebonyi State is merely serving the interest of Gov. David Umahi, and it’s a time bomb waiting to blow, an incident that will interrupt national peace and a direct security threat to the nation.
“It is, therefore, very necessary at this time to banish Ebubeagu Militias in Ebonyi before the 2023 general election otherwise heads will roll in Ebonyi”, he said.
