The Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria has said that the lack of flat-bottomed vessels to transport cargos to Apapa made Ikorodu Lighter Terminal designated for export to fail. This was contained in a statement signed by the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Rakiya Dhikru-Yagboyaju.
According to the statement, the President of CIECOBON, Dr Ayobami Omotosho, said this when the institute paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, in Apapa recently.
Omotosho stressed the need for the institute and NSC to collaborate to promote export in the country.
He urged the NSC to appeal to the Federal Government to establish an export-specific port to further encourage exports.
“One of the shipping lines operating in the subregion has been providing open roof-top vessels for Ghanaian exporters of produce.”
He pleaded with NSC to discuss the possibility of extending such a service to Nigerian exporters.
He added that RIFA containers that should ordinarily be used were too expensive for many exporters.
In his response, Jime assured the delegation that NSC would partner with CIECOBON for the benefit of the nation’s economy.
He commended the doggedness of CIECOBON in promoting export through advocacy and capacity building. Jime enjoined the body to keep forging ahead in its mission with patriotic zeal.
He also assured Omotoso and his delegation that NSC would discuss the request for open rooftop vessels with other stakeholders.
