Following his exceptional start to the 2023 indoor season, Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ashe, is aiming to become Nigeria’s third sprinter in history to run a 6.4secs in the 60m.
The time makes him the fastest 60m by a Nigerian and African athlete this year, and third on the NCAA top list.
The 20-year-old will have to surpass his lifetime best of 6.51secs and become the third Nigerian sprinter to achieve this in history after Deji Aliu’s national record of 6.48secs and Olusoji Fasuba’s 6.49secs.
The Auburn University sophomore student set a season’s best time of 6.53secs at the Tiger Paw Invitational last weekend and now set sight on finishing on a good time in the South Eastern Conference Championships 60m title next week and going under the 6.50secs mark for the first time in his career.
“My goals going into SEC in Arkansas is to lowering my PB, at least doing 6.48secs, 6.49secs and I know yea with what I’ve been doing in practice, I think that at SEC and also I want to be the SEC Champion in the 60m,” Ashe said in a video interview with Mackenzie Hamilton on the school’s Twitter page.
The Nigerian runner has broken several records and won medals as a student at the University of Tennessee. He only transferred to Auburn this season to complete his college career.

The Middle Tennessee State University sophomore student holds the School Record for 60m and 200m indoors, and the 100m and 200m outdoors.
The Nigeria sprinter in January broke the 20-year 60m School Record when he ran a time of 6.59secs at the Commodore Challenge.
