Abbas, who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party, scored 145, 880 votes to defeat Abdulaziz Nyako, from the rival All Progressives Congress, who polled 118, 555 votes.
Abdulaaziz, son of former Governor Murtala Nyako, previously elected to the Senate in 2015, under the platform of the APC, played a key role in the establishment of North East Development Commission. He however never sought re-election to the Senate, opting instead to unseat the Governor Jibrilla Bindow, of the APC, under the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
The PUNCH had projected Abbas to win the Adamawa Central Senatorial District contest, after a tally of results from Ffie out of the seven councils for the district showed the PDP candidate leading his closest challenger, Sen. Abdulaaziz Nyako, of the All Progressives Congress, by a margin that was over 30,000.
Declaring the final results, for Adamawa Central, the returning officer of the poll, Dr. Ahmed Alkali, of the Modibbo Adama University, Yola, declared Abbas winner having polled 145, 880 of the lawful votes cast, to defeat, Nyako who scored 118, 555 votes.
A breakdown of the votes polled by local government as announced at the collation centre in Yola North showed the PDP polled 19,138 in Fufore LGA while APC polled (17,569), Hong LGA PDP (25,535) APC (16,515), Girei LGA APC (10,205) PDP 16,201.
Likewise, in Gombi LGA PDP polled (18,105) APC (12,912), Yola South LGA APC (21, 620) PDP (23, 483) Song LGA APC (14, 284 ) PDP (18, 877) and Yola North LGA PDP (24, 542) and APC (25, 450).
