As the world prepares for the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 13 Nigerian athletes will be competing in the Division 1 Indoor Track and Field of the Championships this weekend.
The NCAA is made up of indoor track and field championships scheduled to be held between March 10-11, 2023, at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
This year’s edition will be the first time the indoor championships have been held in New Mexico since 2014.
The names of Nigerian athletes involved include Godson Brume (60m) Favour Ashe (60m) Udodi Onwuzurike (200m) Alaba Akintola (60m, 200m), Nathaniel Ezekiel (400m) Erhire Best (High Jump), Favour Ofili (60m, 200m) Rosemary Chukwuma (60m, 200m).
Others include Ezinne Abba (60m, 200m), Ella Onojuvwevwo (4x400m), Esther Isa (Long Jump), Onaara Obamuwagun (Triple Jump) Grace Anigbata (Triple Jump).
In his address ahead of the competition, the Director of Athletics, University of New Mexico, Eddie Nuñez, described the championships as a unique opportunity.
He added that the goal of New Mexico is to ensure all attendees have an enjoyable and memorable experience.
“Our staff has worked hard to put together a great championship and we have eagerly looked forward to this event for some time. Please know that all of us are here to ensure you have a good experience in Albuquerque, and we are happy to serve you and answer any questions you may have,” he said.
