The Association of Abia State Town Unions, an arm of the Association of Igbo Town Unions, has tasked governorship candidates in the state to prioritise the well-being and development of the state in their campaign manifestos.
The group, which is made up of 600 autonomous communities in the state, vowed to engage all the candidates aspiring to the number one job in a public interaction before the governorship election.
The president of the association, Chief George Mgborukwe, told our correspondent that the town unions were determined for Abia to experience progress and growth in all economic and infrastructural indices in the political dispensation.
According to Mgborukwe, the town unions are the oldest organisation in Igbo land and that every responsible adult in the state belongs to the town union in his community.
He insisted that no one contesting for any elective office in the state can toy with the association and win the election.
He said, “The town hall meeting we organised became necessary because the union can’t pretend about the earnest need and desires of Abians.
“We want to interact with the candidates of the different political parties aspiring to govern our dear state. We shall not fail or pretend about the need and ernest desire of our people in Abia.
“We want a sincere, true and passionate leader who will be ready to do all that may be required to rescue as well as ensure the speedy and even distributions of good developmental projects across the length and breadth of our dear state. This is exactly one of the major reasons for our interest in the forthcoming election.”
He revealed that only two governorship candidates attended the town hall meeting, adding that the group would not relent until the other candidates presented their manifestos to them.
