Residents of the Denro Community in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State can now heave a sigh of relief after the state government has carried out palliative work on their bridge which was destroyed by a flood last week.
PUNCH Metro had last week reported that residents were having a tough time accessing their homes and connecting neighbouring communities due to the flood which destroyed the bridge connecting them to other communities.
It was gathered that the bridge which had been showing signs of distress for a long time finally collapsed during a downpour witnessed in the area last Monday.
Following the report, however, the state government has fixed the makeshift bridge pending the completion of the main bridge.
Besides the construction work that had resumed on the main bridge, motorists and other road users were seen making use of the makeshift bridge when our correspondent visited the area on Monday.
A resident who did not want his name in print, in an interview with PUNCH Metro, expressed the fear that flood may soon wash away the temporary bridge if the main bridge was not fixed on time.
The resident said, “People are already passing the road. It was fixed last week. But we need the government to finish the construction of the main bridge. This is because the one they just made quickly may not last beyond the rainy season.
“We thank them for fixing this road in such short notice. But we appeal to them to expedite the construction of the main bridge so that there will be an easy flow of traffic along this axis.”
One of the construction workers who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, because he was not authorised to do so, said the completion of the main bridge would be determined by funding.
A source in the state Ministry of Works told our correspondent that the commissioner, Ade Akinsanya, was not available to comment on the development.
In addition, calls and messages sent to the mobile phone of the state Special Adviser on Works, Akeem Adesina, had yet to be responded to when this report was being filed.
