A Magistrates’ Court 1 sitting in Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Wednesday, remanded a police inspector, Ubi Ebri, for allegedly killing a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibeh, in the state.
The court, in case no CMA/135/2023 between the state Commissioner of Police and Ebri, ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre for shooting Ibeh to death.
The charge sheet read, “That you, Ubi Ebri, on April 5, 2023, along Asaba-Ugbolu Road in the Asaba Magisterial district did unlawfully kill one Ibeh Onyeka by shooting him with a gun, thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap C 21 Vol 1 Laws of the Delta State of Nigeria 2006.”
Ibe was shot dead on April 5, 2023, along Ugbolu-Illah Road in Asaba, the Delta State capital for allegedly refusing to give a bribe of N100.
The deceased was said to be a phone seller in the popular Ogbeogonogo Market in the state.
He was said to have been immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Some irate youths paraded the victim’s corpse on the streets of Asaba to register their anger.
Ebri was later identified and arrested by the command.
He has since been dismissed.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, gave an update on the case in a statement on Wednesday.
Edafe said, “The court ordered the suspect to be remanded at the Ogwashi Uku Correctional Centre while the case file is sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect by the office of the DPP.
“The plea was not taken while bail was not granted. We hope this will serve as a deterrent to others officers.”
