Fire in the early hours of Thursday destroyed goods worth over N8.6 million in 5 shops at the Akerebiata area of Ilorin in Ilorin-East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The fire incident occurred on Thursday with no one including the Security men noticing it before it escalated and consumed the five shops before the arrival of the men from the state Fire Service.
Firemen attributed the cause of the fire outbreak to an electric spark in the area.
The state fire service which confirmed the incident in a statement by Hassan Adekunle, head of Media and Publicity said, “The fire incident occurred early this morning, at about 5:08hrs, at Akerebiata opposite Bovas filling station Ilorin in Ilorin-East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
“There is no one in the area even the security guards to notice the fire outbreak on time. It was a passerby man who saw the ravaging inferno and quickly summoned the state fire service to rescue the situation,” The leading fire officer said.
However, firemen did everything possible to immediately stop the spread of the burning fire to the other shops and subsequently eliminated the fire.
“Report says, the cause of the fire outbreak was suspected to be an electric surge. The estimated property saved was N52.5 million Naira and the estimated property lost was N8.6million.
Therefore, The Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, urged the general public especially the market people to be more safety conscious.
“He also advised them against unmonitored charging practice that many people in the society are doing at their various shops, offices, and homes. As this could endanger their lives and their property.”
