A much-anticipated charity event, the Met Gala, has returned for the 2023 edition and millions of viewers are looking forward to the glitz and glamour.
Dubbed fashion’s biggest night, the show customarily holds every first Monday in the month of May and is attended by several big names in Hollywood.
The organisers of the show, Vogue, earlier announced that the year’s dress code was “In honour of Karl”. This was to pay homage to late legendary and controversial fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld.
On Monday night, a Costume Institute Exhibition titled, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” will be also opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in honour of the fashion icon.
Below are attractions to expect from the event:
Karl Lagerfeld
As one of the biggest names in fashion, Lagerfeld has a career spanning over several decades. Asides from his own eponymous luxury brand, Karl also worked with big fashion houses like Fendi, Patou, Balmain, Chloé, and Chanel. Over 150 pieces made by Lagerfeld as well as his sketches will be on display at the event.
However, the talented designer has a history of controversial remarks which has drawn backlash over the years. He was accused of fat shaming women after saying, “Nobody wants to see curvy women” in a 2009 interview with the German magazine Focus. His most controversial comment came at the height of the #MeToo movement when he slammed victims choosing to speak up against sexual predators in the entertainment industry.
“If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting even,” he said during an interview with Numero magazine in 2018.
Kim Kardashian
After her stint with the Marilyn Monroe dress at last year’s Met, both fans and critics are expectant surprises to be pulled by the reality TV star this year. The mother of four confirmed she will be in attendance with a post shared via her Instagram page in April, where she posed with Lagerfield’s surviving pet cat.
“Had a date with @choupetteofficiel in Paris. We then spent some time at @karllagerfeld’s office to get a little inspiration for the Met,” she wrote in the caption.
Hosts
Vogue announced in January that this year’s event will be hosted by actresses, Penélope Cruz, and Michaela Coel; tennis player, Roger Federer, and singer Dua Lipa,
Guest List
The Met Gala guest list is a tightly guarded secret and viewers are only able to confirm stars that will be in attendance on the D-day. However, some stars usually let the cat out of the bag before the event. Asides from Kim Kardashian, another star who has confirmed attendance is pop singer, Rita Ora. Supermodel, Gisele Bundchen will also be at the show and will be attending solo, following her divorce from her husband, Tom Brady.
Unfortunately, the queen of the Met red carpet, Blake Lively had revealed that she would not be in attendance. The actress who stunned in a dramatic dress at last year’s edition of the event welcomed her fourth child in February.
Nigerian Stars
While the artistes have not made any confirmations as to their attendance, Afrobeats stars, Burna Boy and Tems are rumoured to be on the guest list. In videos making rounds on the Internet on Monday, Burna was seen arriving in New York reportedly for the event.
Grammy award-winning Tems, who made a statement with her view-blocking dress at the 2023 Oscar, is also expected to be in attendance.
