Operatives of Delta State Police Command have arrested four robbery suspects with 30 rounds of 7.62 AK47 live ammunition and 250 rounds of live cartridges.
The arrests came barely three days after the new Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, resumed duties
It was gathered that on Tuesday around 8pm, the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division Warri, CSP T.Y Mahmud, led the divisional anti-crime patrol team out on a confidence-building patrol to curtail the activities of kidnappers and armed robbers in Warri and its environs.
During the patrol, the team reportedly intercepted a tricycle along Eagle Roundabout by Ugunu Bridge.
The tricycle was said to be conveying three occupants.
When they were subjected to a search, 30 rounds of 7.62 AK47 live ammunition were recovered from two of the passengers namely Eddy Aboyowa (37) and Akpani Isaiah (35), both of Eyiejuku Street off Deco Road, Warri.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, said the suspects were presently in custody while an investigation is ongoing into the matter.
Our correspondent gathered that the command’s decoy squad had earlier received an intelligence report on a syndicate that supplies cartridges to kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists.
The operatives led by the Commander Decoy squad, ASP Julius Robinson, had subsequently embarked on a sting operation and arrested one Chinedu Enenmo (37) of Akere Ogidi, the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State at their hideout in one of the popular hotels in Asaba, where they hibernated and carried out their nefarious activities.
Exhibits recovered from the suspect included 250 rounds of live cartridges.
The PPRO affirmed that during the course of the investigation, the suspect gave useful information about his accomplice and led the operatives to the Fegge area of Onitsha in Anambra State where one Donatus Ndukan (34) of Urom community in the Awka-North Local Government Area of Anambra State, whom he described as his boss in the business, was also arrested.
Both suspects are presently in custody as an investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Abass, while addressing officers and men of the command, urged them to carry out their duties diligently, adding that only result-oriented officers will retain their offices.
