A Non-Governmental Organisation, Sir Clement Chuku Foundation, says it has sponsored the registration of 100 students for the year 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The founder, Mrs Ekeleoma Chuku, made this disclosure to journalists in her hometown of Onicha in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Council Area of the state on Thursday.
Chuku, a US-based lawyer, who was represented by the foundation’s Director of Protocol and Logistics, Mr. Dennis Osum said that the beneficiary students were drawn from Umuevu, Umuaghara and Umuvu villages, in Onicha Nwankwo Community as well as from Obokwu Obizi village.
She also informed that the beneficiaries had enjoyed free preparatory classes since January 2023, adding that the Foundation did the same for 30 students in 2022, who performed excellently in the WASSC examinations.
According to her, the gesture was borne out of a desire to preserve the legacies of her late father, who had a strong passion for education but unfortunately lost the battle to prostate cancer.
“Our foundation offers not just free WASSCE registration, but also free tests and treatment for prostate cancer patients, all in memory of my father, the late Sir Clement Chuku, who died of complications resulting from prostate cancer.
“We are well-established in the United States and we have concluded arrangements to kick off operations in Malawi just like we have here in Nigeria,” she said.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the preparatory lesson centre, Mr Ugochukwu Echehie, explained that the centre employed the services of teachers who specialise in teaching the humanities, sciences and business management areas to accommodate students’ areas of concentration.
Similarly, the foundation’s Director of Human Resources, Mr Chinonye Ezurike, revealed that the NGO provided cash for 40 women of Onicha town during the period of a cash crunch brought about by the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
One of the beneficiaries, Alphonsus Okoro, a student of Onicha Secondary School, Ezinihitte Mbaise, said he would pay back the foundation by working hard and excelling in the examinations.
Another beneficiary, Miracle Ofoma of Mbaise Girls’ High School, Onicha, thanked the group for the “great opportunity” and prayed to God to reward the founder.
