…Says traffickers charged to court, users undergoing counselling
The Federal Capital Territory Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said it has arrested 34 suspects when it conducted a sweep operation on illicit drug dens in the territory.
The FCT Commander, NDLEA, Kabir Tsakuwa, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, adding that some of the arrested suspects have been charged to court, while arrested users amongst them are undergoing counselling.
Tsakuwa said, “The operation was necessitated by the need to combat drug abuse, especially as Nigeria prepares for handover to a new administration, adding that the command initiated “Operation Tsaro” on May 8, to shut down drug centres and apprehend dealers in the FCT.
“Our operatives seized a variety of illicit substances, including Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine, Tramadol, Codeine, Rohypnol, and other psychotropic substances.”
The commander noted that the raid would continue until the agency effectively eradicate hard drugs from circulation, in order to reduce criminal activities in the FCT.
“Some of the drug hotspots raided include Torabora, Dei-dei, Wuse Zone 4, Wuse Zone 3, Banex, Garki Village, Area 1, Gwarimpa (Village, 3rd Avenue), Abattoir in Karu, Gwagwalada, Kabusa, and Kuchigoro IDP Camp.
“While some of the arrested individuals have been charged and taken to court, others who are users are undergoing counselling sessions,” he added.
