The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, on Thursday, condemned the excessive use of force by policemen enforcing the ban on the use of commercial motorcycles in certain parts of the state.
Owohunwa made his position known when he visited a motorcyclist who was seen being assaulted by policemen in a recent viral video.
Three policemen were seen in the video brutalising the motorcyclist, leaving him with an injury on his head.
One of the policemen left the scene with the victim’s bike while the two others left in a tricycle.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a series of tweets via his Twitter handle, @BenHundeyin, Owohunwa condemned the policemen’s actions and told the public that disciplinary action had already been taken against the men.
Hundeyin wrote, “CP Idowu Owohunwa today (Thursday) visited the young man involved in this incident and members/leadership of Hausa community in Abattoir Market, Agege.
“The CP, who condemned the excessive use of force by the policemen in enforcing the existing ban on the use of motorcycles in certain parts of Lagos State, has assured members of the public that the disciplinary measures already initiated against the men would be brought to a logical conclusion and the outcome made public.
“The Command will continue to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, while not relenting in enforcing the laws of the land.”
Meanwhile, the state police command said it had arrested a 20-year-old boy, Benjamin Iggba, for allegedly stealing a cable that belonged to the state electricity board.
Hundeyin said the suspect was nabbed by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad for possessing a 20-metre-long cable.
While noting that the suspect was already facing prosecution, the Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, was quoted as saying his men had intensified efforts to arrest the three other suspects who absconded.
The police said additional items found on the suspect include two diggers; one shovel and armoured cables.
