Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers on Saturday struck at Ekredjebor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State shooting to death two police officers attached to the Ughelli Area Command in the state.
Eye witness accounts revealed that one other policeman was left in critical condition.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the embattled police officers had a gun duel with the suspected armed robbers who invaded Okoruwe Street, by Winners Junction in Ekredjebor community on Friday night during which encounter the hoodlums allegedly carted away their arms.
Witnesses named the attacked officers as one Ujeyah Matthew, Sgt. Ijebu and one other whose identity could not be immediately ascertained.
Giving an account of the gory incident, one of the local sources told journalists that there were “heavy gunshots” along Ekredjebor road, Ughelli, by Okoruwe Street (Winners) junction.
“Two men suspected to be policemen could be seen lying lifeless on the road, just by the speed breaker. They were gunned down by men suspected to be robbers. None of the deceased officers had guns with them, an indication that the criminals may have gone away with their rifles,” the source who would not want his identity in print stated.
He, however, disclosed that a detachment of policemen and members of the community Vigilante later stormed the crime scene along Ekredjebor road, near Sokaje Hotel, Ughelli.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe could not be reached for comments on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
Reliable security sources from the community however confirmed the incident noting that “two police officers were shot dead, while one Sgt. Ijebu is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital”.
