The PUNCH reports that the AMVCA was held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Balmoral Convention Centre and Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. The Jewel, a Netflix film, grabbed a plaque brushing off stiff competition from nominees which included Emmanuel Mwape for “Silver Lining” and Leburugraphy for “Ke Bona Spoko.”
Jewel’s victory is Chuck’s third AMVCA after his first AMVCA win with his movie titled ‘A Wish’ which won the ‘Best Movie Comedy’ category in 2013 and his second AMVCA with ‘All About Love’ as Best Movie South Africa in 2017.
The latest solidifies his position as one of Africa’s most talented and accomplished filmmakers and also highlights his profound impact on the continent’s cinematic landscape.
“Jewel” mesmerized audiences and critics alike with its gripping narrative that traverses the rich cultural tapestry of Southern Africa. Speaking of the latest award, Chucks vowed not to rest on his oars. He expressed gratitude to the AMVCA organizers, the cast and crew of “Jewel,” and his supporters who have stood by him throughout his career. He dedicated the award to the African film community and pledged to continue creating groundbreaking and thought-provoking films that reflect the diversity and beauty of the continent.
He said, “It’s always surreal to be honoured for creativity, almost unbelievable the Jewel victory at the awards. We are humbled that the organisers and our fans recognised our hard work. This award is a call to do more; to be more creative, to research more and to bring our best foot forward at all times.
“My fans should expect more from us. We are releasing a new series soon on Netflix, with RMD (Richard Mofe Damijo) and other seasoned actors and actresses, playing significant roles.”
The AMVCA is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in African cinema, celebrating excellence and creativity in the industry.
