Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, narrowly escaped death on Saturday when his convoy was reportedly blocked and attacked by some hoodlums suspected to be political thugs.
A statement by the state Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, blamed people believed to be supporters of Alhaji Muritala Ajaka, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the November 11, 2023 election, for the attack at about 12.30 hours on Saturday.
“The attack took place near the Naval Base, few kilometres from Lokoja, where the convoy of Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, having sighted that of the governor, blocked the road and some of his armed thugs started shooting sporadically at the convoy of the governor.
“A Tundra vehicle branded with the logo of the SDP and with the party’s flags also blocked the governor’s vehicle and occupants of the SDP branded Tundra were armed with rifles and short guns.
“The governor left the scene unscathed and there is no cause for panic as the governor is in high spirit,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, Ajaka has shed light on how he escaped alleged assassination attempt on his life
The incident, according to him, took place in Koton Karfi, on his way back from the palace of one of the traditional rulers, where he went to intimate him of his ambition to run for the election.
Ajaka told journalists on Saturday night that the attack was allegedly masterminded and supervised by top politician whose aide allegedly open fire on him and his convoy.
He said about seven persons were injured and are receiving treatment in an undisclosed Hospital.
