A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, has remanded one Adekunle Olawale for allegedly raping his eight-year-old daughter in the Ebute-Metta area of the state.
The Lagos State Police Command, on Wednesday, arraigned the defendant before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka on one count of defilement.
The 46-year-old defendant was accused of severally sleeping with his daughter anytime his wife was away.
He, however, denied the accusation.
“I did not do it. God will judge, he will separate the truth from lies,” he said after the court ordered his remand.
The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant committed the crime in 2022, adding that the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The charge read in part, “That you, Adekunle Olawale, between in 2022 at Ebute-Metta, Yaba, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District unlawfully defiled one girl (name withheld) aged eight years and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
The defendant’s plea was not taken.
Nurudeen prayed the court to remand the defendant pending the outcome of legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
Granting the prosecutor’s request, Nwaka ordered the immediate remand of the defendant pending the DPP’s advice.
The case was adjourned till July 7, 2023.
