Routelink says it has been granted a Mobile Virtual Network Operating licence by the Nigerian Communications Commission.
According to a statement by the firm, the MVNO licence is a new mobile licence category in Nigeria aimed at bridging the gap between the unserved and the underserved. It stated that the MVNO licence is its third licence from NCC.
The Group Managing Director of Routelink Group, Femi Adeoti, explained that MVNOs are carriers that don’t have their own wireless network but instead piggyback off another carrier’s platform for coverage through their cell phone plans.
He said, “Routelink is excited about the opportunities that abound in the Nigerian telecom marketplace and is determined to make a major difference as regards quality of service and innovation.”
He noted that the new licence category would benefit subscribers as they would enjoy mobile services at a lower cost, provide more service options, and better quality of service.
The statement further stated that in its drive to create an enabling environment, the NCC has introduced the MVNOs licence that will generate employment and bridge the gap between the unserved and the Underserved in Society.
It expressed optimism that the development would also further engender competition and provide choices for telecommunication consumers.
The statement added that the success of MVNOs in the country would ultimately depend on various factors such as regulatory policies, infrastructure availability, and market demand.
