The fire incident happened around 4:32 p.m., a statement signed by TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said on Wednesday.
According to the company, the operator on duty heard a heavy bang from the switchyard and immediately moved to the switchyard to investigate the sound, only to find fire under the cooling fans/fins of the transformer.
Although frantic efforts were made to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher in the substation, the company said the oil that started dripping from the transformer ignited the fire more.
This made the engineer switch off the power supply in the substation on the 300 MVA 330/132/33KV transformer and also make calls to the Federal Fire Service in Onikan and the Lagos State Fire Service at Dolphin Estate.
The fire was put out at 7:35 a.m. by the fire services.
From the initial assessment, TCN said the transformer can be repaired, and presently, the situation is under control.
Normal supply to the station was restored at 7:27 a.m. while all available transformers in the station were restored.
TCN expressed sadness over the incident and vowed to commence a comprehensive check of the affected transformer immediately.
“All customers feeding from Alagbon 330/132/33KV substation will have supply tonight. The situation is under control, and TCN will do a comprehensive check of the affected transformer immediately to enable it to properly assess the transformer for repair work.
“We are truly saddened by this incident, especially as the company had operated from the beginning of this year to date without any system collapse or major incident such as this.
“Even as we have already mobilised our engineers to commence the transformer assessment and repair work immediately, we will endeavour to ascertain the trigger of this fire incident with the view to forestall such incidents in our substations”, the statement read.
