Adeoluwa, who said the students’ loan scheme is a step in the right direction, noted, “In some climes outside Nigeria, in the United Kingdom for example, a lot of university students run on loans, which they pay back gradually after their graduation after they have secured employment. That will go a long way to assist a lot of students”.
The VC spoke at Ikere Ekiti during the matriculation ceremony conducted for the 3,490 fresh students officially inducted into the BOUESTI’s colleges of education, science and technology for the
2022/2023 academic calendar.
He urged Nigerians to exercise patience to see the Students Loan programme manifest so that any likely contradictions and intricacies there could be amended “so that it can run properly for our students to find some respite from hustling for school fees”.
Adeoluwa said that with such respite, students would be able “to settle down and study well so that when they graduate, they can be able to pay back. This is in the right direction”.
The VC, who explained that experience showed that many students were indigent, stressed, “Here at BOUESTI, we have been putting one programme or the other in place in order to assist them, we bail out some of them and we employ some as cleaners, gardeners etc and we pay them monthly in order to be able to sustain themselves”.
He urged the freshers to take entrepreneurship and vocational studies serious, saying, “We tutor our students to be self-reliant. That is our motor, ‘Learning for self-reliance’, so that before they graduate, they must be able to find one thing or the other they can do that will sustain them in the meantime”.
Adeoluwa, who equally advised the students to strive for excellence through hard work and dedication to their academic pursuits, maintained, “Here, there is zero-tolerance for moral decadence and vices such as indiscipline, indolence, cultism, bullying, cyber-crimes, examination malpractices, harassment, among others”.
The VC, while decrying acts of indecent dressing on campus, advised, “Students are encouraged to dress according to the acceptable standards, which will not infuriate the sensibilities of others. Measures are in place to apprehend indecently dressed students for appropriate actions”.
