According to the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of AUATWON, Jossy Olawale, in a statement said the suspension was to permit discussion with the government.
He said the meeting fixed with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Uber, Bolt and the union would hold on June 26, 2023.
The PUNCH reports that ride-hailing drivers went on a nationwide strike on June 7, 2023, to demand an increase in their fares by 200 per cent from the ride-hailing companies.
Among other demands, the union is also asking for a 50 per cent reduction in commission as ride-hailing companies — Uber and Bolt collect a 20 per cent commission on every ride — and an end to the deactivation of drivers who refuse to work due to the low fares and attendant unprofitability.
Olawale said, “The union and some app companies had earlier scheduled a meeting with the ministry for June 20 but got a letter that the meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, June 26.
“As a result of this, we wish to announce that the strike would not hold to allow the meeting to hold as stated.”
Speaking on the increased petrol pump price, he said, “We are concerned about the various challenges and multiplier effect the 300 per cent hike in the pump price of petrol has on our service delivery.”
