The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has inaugurated 454 housing units built by the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, to resettle over 2,700 victims of Boko Haram insurgency forced to flee their homes.
The 454 housing units are located in Labondo, Girei Local Government area of the state.
Fintiri, during the inauguration of the housing units, on Tuesday, applauded the role of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, for bringing succour to IDPs in the North-East.
Fintiri promised to look into the request of the IDPs for the electrification of the project.
The governor remarked that over the years, Adamawa State had borne tremendous burden of caring for IDPs fleeing insurgency and other forms of conflict in the North-East as well as from neighbouring countries such as Cameroon.
He said, “I urge the 454 households and approximately 2,700 individuals who are beneficiaries of these houses and other interventions to cultivate good maintenance culture to ensure their sustainability.”
The UNHCR Country representative in Nigeria, Ms Chanya Kapaya, explained that the project was a pilot intervention project, properly known as “Labondo Local Integration Project” in Adamawa State, as parts of a collective pursuit of durable solutions in addressing the plight of internally displaced persons in the state.
