The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has expressed its commitment to driving financial literacy to the young generation in the country.
It organised its ‘2023 Financial Literacy Day Seminar’ for some selected schools in Lagos State with the theme, ‘Plan your money, plant your future’.
The NDIC noted that the seminar as part of its efforts in commemorating the 11th annual Global Money Week that was held worldwide.
It noted that the GMW is an annual global awareness-raising campaign on the importance of ensuring that young people, from an early age, were financially aware, and gradually acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve financial well-being and financial resilience.
One of the participants at the event, a Director at the Ministry of Education, Lagos State, Mr Adeyemi Adebayo, while appreciating the NDIC for the lecture, assured the organisers that the Ministry of Basic Education Services would work towards the establishment of the investment clubs within schools across Lagos State, given its importance.
Adebayo said, “The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC has done a very great thing. And when you listen to what the children are saying, you will discover that the children are enthusiastic about it, they are excited about it. And in the long run, the Ministry of Education will encourage the establishment of investment clubs in our schools across Lagos State.”
The Principal of Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Secondary School, Mr Morenikeji Badejo, stated that catching the students young on financial literacy was a good initiative.
The NDIC noted that it is charged with the responsibility for implementing the deposit insurance in the country.
It provided a financial guarantee to protect depositors in the event of a bank failure and offered a measure of safety for the banking system.
The ultimate objective is to protect small and unsophisticated savers who constitute the bulk of the depositors in the Nigerian banking system, as well as to ensure the stability of the system.
