Officials of the Nigerian Navy who were said to be on a mission to avenge the killing of their colleague, on Tuesday, invaded the Idoani community in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the naval officers, during the invasion, searched for the suspect linked to the killing of their colleague, and in the process, created tension that threw residents in the community into a panic.
In a bid to escape the wrath of the naval officers, a source said many adult males fled, adding that traders at shops and markets in the community refused to conduct business for fear of victimisation.
The source, however, noted that some hoodlums attacked the naval officer during an argument with a commercial motorcyclist in the community
After the attack, the source said the naval officer sustained varying degrees of injury and was rushed to a hospital in the community where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
It was learnt that the motorcyclist linked to the crime was apprehended and handed over to the police, adding that a hoodlum also linked to the crime had been on the run.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, promised to get the details of the incident but had yet to revert to our correspondent as of the time this report was filed.
