The Rivers State Police Command has said its men rescued a kidnap victim and recovered arms and ammunition during separate raids of kidnappers’ hideouts and militant camps in some parts of the state.
The state Commissioner for Police, Emeka Nwonyi, disclosed this at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Nwonyi said with the help of a vigilante, the police combed a forest near China Bridge on Wednesday, where a kidnapped woman was rescued.
He added, “She (the victim) stated that she was kidnapped on 26/06/2023 at about 1950hrs along Salvation Ministry Road, Rumuosi Choba, Port Harcourt while returning from her shop to the house in her Lexus 330 SUV, whose registration number is yet unknown. She has been united with members of her family. Efforts are ongoing to track and arrest the hoodlums.”
Similarly, Nwonyi said policemen, assisted by the Army, invaded some cult (militant) camps in Ahoada East and West councils operated by three self-acclaimed generals, who fled through a nearby river on sighting the operatives.
“The following items were recovered from their camps: one locally-made single-barrelled gun, nine empty cartridges, two motorcycles, three pumping engines, one small generator, two sawing engines, charms, and 10 sheets of zinc,” he added.
In a related development, the CP said on Monday, June 26, 2023, a team of policemen attached to the Intelligence and Surveillance Centre, Port Harcourt, while on a routine patrol along Rumuokwuta, linking Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt, sighted a white keke bus.
He said, “When the keke bus was searched, one locally-made pistol with one live ammunition, one LG plasma television, two Android phones, one Itel phone, and a female handbag were recovered.”
Nwonyi said investigation was ongoing to apprehend the fleeing miscreants and make them face justice.
