Members of the Abia State Community Vigilante, Isiala Ngwa Community South Command, have arrested six persons in connection with the death of a 53-year-old woman, Amarachi Nwanozie.
The remains of the woman were recovered on a farm in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased’s husband raised the alarm when the woman who left for her farm last Wednesday did not return as of 5pm.
The man and other locals were said to have combed her farmland and the surroundings but could not find her that evening.
He was said to have complained to the vigilantes the next day and the men later located the corpse of the deceased whom they claimed was raped to death.
The group’s spokesman, Victor Ogidinta, disclosed this in a report on the incident.
The report said, “The remains of a woman, Amarachi Nwanozie, were recovered by personnel of the Abia State Community Vigilante, Isiala Ngwa Community South Command.
“This happened after her husband raised the alarm of the disappearance of his wife around 5pm on July 12, 2023.
“Her husband said she left for her farm earlier in the day around 9am, unfortunately, she didn’t return on time which raised suspicions about her whereabouts.
“The next day after they couldn’t find her, he subsequently reported the matter to personnel of Amangwa Vigilante Service, Isiala Ngwa South Command, who dispatched a team in search of the woman.
“Her unclad corpse was found alongside her handset and a bundle of cassava stems in a bush close to her farm and has now been deposited in a morgue.
“After thorough investigation, six suspects were arrested in connection to her death on allegations of rape and handed over to the Omoba Police Division by the State Commandant of Abia State Community Vigilante, Dr Daniel Iheadindueme, and the suspects had subsequently been transferred to the Isiala Ngwa Area Command headquarters.”
Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, said she would confirm the report and revert.
She was yet to do so as of press time.
