Nigerian Army personnel have intercepted a truck transporting large quantities of ammunition to Anambra State.
The ammunition was recovered during a stop and search operation along Ajilete-Owode road in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Saturday.
Troops during the operation arrested a Ghanaian identified as Eric Seworvor and a Nigerian Lukman Sani.
According to a signal on the operation sighted by our correspondent on Monday, the ammunition was smuggled into the country from Mali.
It added that the ammunition was well concealed in an empty truck.
The signal read, “Arrest of ammunition/suspects. Own troops conducted Stop and search operation along road Ajilete-Owode in Yewa North LGA and intercepted a truck with a number plate ENU 697 XY loaded with 720 cartons of red star carts of 12 calibres containing 25 carts each (18,000 carts) and 250 packets of live carts of pellets black containing 10 carts each (2500 carts) of the same calibre.
“The vehicle, the exhibit, and suspects were heading to Onitsha, Anambra state. The exhibit was conveyed from Mali via the Idiroko International border in a well-concealed empty truck. The two suspects are Eric Seworvor age 32, a Ghanaian while the driver, Lukman Sani age 42 from Ogun. The arrested suspects claimed they were heading to Anambra state to deliver the exhibit where the owner resides. Items recovered from them include an ECOWAS ID card belonging to Eric, 125000 CFA, N245,100, and 60 GHA Cedis. ”
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Oneyma Nwachukwu could not be reached for comment.
Calls to his line were not answered while a response to the message sent to him was being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
