The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunshola, has advised young Nigerians to be technologically savvy.
Speaking at the GOS Up-Skill Initiative organised by the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Ogunshola stressed that any student or young person who was not technologically savvy would have challenges in the future.
The initiative was sponsored by an alumnus of UNILAG, Senator Ganiyu Olarenwaju Solomon and organised for the graduating students of UNILAG.
They were trained in product design, data analytics, web development, graphics design, and digital marketing.
She said, “Technology is like the paper and pencil of the future. And any student at this time or any young person who is not technologically savvy is going to have a challenge in the future. We keep saying future but the future is already upon us. In every aspect, the more you know how to handle technology the better.
Speaking on the skills learned by students during the programme, Ogunshola, added, “I like the programs they have taken, like data analytics. One thing we’re doing in today’s world is generating data. Data are considered the new oil. We also have digital marketing, web design, etc. I think this is really very good because whatever job you have, having a second stream of income that you can do anywhere makes you a global citizen, so I like it.”
Solomon appreciated the effort of the association and the VC saying, “First l will implore all the participants to seize the opportunity and learn whatever is put before them. It is the era of technology and what they have chosen to learn is for the improvement of their knowledge of technology.”
Chairman, University of Lagos, Alumni Association, Lagos State Chapter, Mr Adedeji Owoeye, said, “We decided to do a skill acquisition for them the graduating students, we approached the distinguished Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon and he keyed into the idea and sponsored it.”
