Australia women’s captain Sam Kerr won’t feature for the Matildas against Nigeria next Thursday at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after picking up an injury in training on Wednesday.
As a result, she also missed Australia’s opening game against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday (yesterday).
The co-hosts without their star captain….(result of the game).
The Chelsea star also issued a statement after it emerged she will miss Australia’s first two matches of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Kerr revealed she suffered the injury at training on Wednesday.
“I wanted to share this with everyone so there is no distraction from us doing what we came here to achieve,” Kerr wrote.
“Of course I would have loved to have been out there tonight but I can’t wait to be a part of this amazing journey, which starts now.”
The Matildas medical team will reassess Kerr’s fitness after next Thursday’s clash with Nigeria.
Depending on how well the Super Falcons start against Canada on Friday (today), Kerr’s absence next Thursday at the Brisbane Stadium might be a boost for Nigeria’s qualification from Group B.
Nigeria’s third game will be against the Republic of Ireland on July 31.
