An Area Court in Jos on Friday sentenced a 44-year-old man, Aminu Mohammed, to three months’ imprisonment for defrauding his employer of N600,000.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the judge, Shawumi Bokkos, sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to fraud and begged the court for leniency.
Bokkos, however, gave him an option of N10,000 fine and ordered him to pay N500,000 as compensation to the complainant, Mr Idris Danjuma, failure of which would attract six months’ imprisonment.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported to the police on February 26 by Danjuma.
Gokwat said the driver transported goods from Kano to Lagos and was to remit N600,000 to Danjuma, but deliberately converted the sum for personal use.
The prosecutor said during police investigation, Muhammed confessed to the crime, adding that N50,000 was recovered from him.
