The Accra Institute of Technology, Ghana, has said the open university approach will improve enrollment and broaden access to tertiary education in Africa.
Speaking while introducing the institute in Lagos, the founder of AIT, Prof. Clement Dzidonu, explained that it offered conventional campus-based degree programmes where students could come to campus and have face-to-face lectures, adding that open university programmes were unique in Africa.
He said, “They offer workers the opportunity to pursue further education and acquire degrees without leaving their work or getting a study leave. AIT introduced the open university approach to education delivery in Africa in order to dramatically improve enrollment and broaden access to tertiary education.
“We also offer university programs at the Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and PhD degree levels in collaboration with the Open University of Malaysia.”
He revealed that AIT was accredited by the National Accreditation Board and affiliated to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for all the campus-based programmes and Open University of Malaysia for Open University programmes.
“We offer these campus-based programs at the Bachelor’s degree level in affiliation with KNUST
Our open university programmes are offered at the Bachelor’s, Master’s degree, and Ph.D levels.
He said the open university system would benefit, “Workers looking for further education without going on study leave.
“You cannot earn international degrees with exorbitant fees, AIT should be your prefered choice. Those who seek for technologically oriented university without buying very expensive books, materials etc. Trained teachers seeking for higher degrees in education.
“AIT has modern technologies deployed to run all our programmes online without students necessarily coming to Ghana. Students therefore don’t need to come to Ghana to enjoy the AIT education. You can remain in Nigeria and still school in Ghana.”
