Akande, while delivering a lecture titled, ‘Enhancing Good Governance In A Beleaguered Economy’ organised by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Zone ‘B’, in Osogbo, Osun State on Wednesday, said effective anti-corruption measures should be implemented and enforced to promote transparency within public institutions.
He said Nigeria was currently in an era of economic uncertainty, contending with multiple issues such as high unemployment rates, reduced productivity, and limited access to resources.
To effectively tackle the challenges, Akande, who harped on the need to explore the role of good governance in fostering sustainable development, and economic growth, also identified effective fiscal management, investment in education and skills development, as well as the creation of social safety nets with economic diversification, among others as strategies that must be adopted to enhance good governance in the country.
He further said, “Combating Corruption Corruption undermines the very essence of good governance and exacerbates economic crises. Effective anti-corruption measures should be implemented and enforced to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity within public institutions.
“To ensure that public resources are used efficiently and for the benefit of all, we must prioritise eradicating corruption at all levels of government. As we strive to enhance good governance in our beleaguered economy, combating corruption must be at the forefront of our efforts.”
Speaking earlier, the Vice President, NUJ Zone ‘B’, Aderonke Afebioye-Samo, said the lecture was organised as part of measures by the union to create a platform for stakeholders to discuss and proffer solutions to national challenges.
Afebioye-Samo, who noted that the country was undergoing a serious economic dilemma occasioned by the total removal of subsidy on petroleum products, said NUJ was living up to its responsibility of educating the citizens about policies and programmes of the government, while also drawing the attention of the government to the plight of the people with a view to ameliorating the hardship.
